Project240K – The initial Plan and an RB25 engine

Posted by Kent in K Engine

The Plan for this project has changed quite a lot (as most projects seem to!)

The car was destined to compete in a Charity Bash, but after getting the car, and (admittedly) getting a little carried away with planned (POWER!) upgrades, A second dedicated 240K was purchased for the rally. The second car was prepered in preperation for the rally, however at the last minute, our major sponsor pulled out on us and we were unable to enter.

With this requirement removed from the car’s future, I decided to get a little more serious with the plan and to turn the car into a KPGC110 GT-R replica with a semi stripped race interior on the inside, and a more modern engine under the hood. I want the car to be road registered, reliable and fun drive whilst also being well prepared for any track day. I also wanted the car to be presentable at car shows to try and raise awareness of the early Skyline blood.

The decision to turn the car into a GT-R replica was an easy one; there are some very subtle and not so subtle differences between the GT-R and the more regular models. The most obvious changes are the additions of the wheel flares and a sporty grill. More subtle changes included badges and distinct trim. As the GT-R only came in White, Red and Grey, the colour choice would be limited, although the shade may not be 100% original.

As for the interior, I wanted to try and make a hybrid of a GT-R replica interior, partially stripped for a race look, but also maintain a comfortable and functional interior

As the original KPGC110 GT-R came with the legendary S20 engine (a 2 Litre straight Six twin-cam race bred engine), I originally decided to go with the mid early 90′s Nissan RB20DET engine (also a 2 Litre straight Six Twin Cam Race Bred (RB) engine with a single turbo). After purchasing the engine, I decided that with the amount of work required to get the car up to my specification, i may as well aim for a higher power output… So the RB20DET idea was sold off, and attention turned to purchasing the later 2.5 Litre turbo Nissan engine from the R33 and R34 Skyline GTST/GTT (the RB25DET).

A Series 2 engine from a 1997 Nissan R33 Skyline GTS-T was purchased along with it’s accompanying 5 speed gearbox. The standard engine has an over engine intake plenum arrangment that would cause issues with piping on the 240K (having to install an intercooler with inlet and outlet on the same side), so a Greddy side intake was purchased from the US. whilst installing the plenum, a set of 700cc Nismo RB26 injectors were installed along with a Greddy top feed fuel rail. To set the engine apart, the cam covers and intake plenum where powder coated in what was meant to be a gold, however it turned out a mustard yellow colour. Later on these were repainted with a metallic red.  Along with the upgraded engine and gearbox, the drivetrain would also have to be upgraded along with the brakes and suspension.
